WinsfordVisitor Guide to Winsford village on ExmoorWinsford is an attractive village in a valley N of Dulverton. It has 2 hotels, one shop/PO, a tea garden, parish church and a Service Station (not fuel). The River Exe and the Winn Brook meet at Winsford and there are eight bridges and a ford (hence the name). The old school house is now a Community Computing Centre with excellent facilities regularly open for public use, internet access, and training courses. HistoryKarslake House was a 15th century malthouse and room 5 has the original stone malt-drying floor. The thatched Royal Oak, now repaired following a disastrous fire, dates to the 12thC and was an important hostelry for wool and yarn carriers en-route to Exeter. Just up the road is the cottage birthplace of Ernest Bevin (b 1881) who was Minister of Labour during the second world war and later Foreign Secretary. |
